Obituary announcement for old comrade Norman Arthur Parish

NORMAN ARTHUR PARISH Obituary pic
NORMAN ARTHUR PARISH June 11, 1917 - August 25, 2017 Dad lived through many changes during his 100 plus years but was a quiet, unassuming gentleman through it all. He had been married to Eileen for 72 years when she passed away three years ago, having spent the last four months of their life together in West Park Manor. Dad served in the Signal Corp in the Belgium Campaign during the Second World War but rarely spoke of his war experiences. He returned to a business career and a family in Toronto where he lived until moving to Winnipeg with Eileen in 1991, at the age of 74. Norm was very proud of his two daughters Louise (Dave Kennedy) and Linda (Gord Johnstone) and always supported and encouraged them in their careers and life choices. His joy of family was expanded with four grandchildren Michael Kennedy (Amanda), Mark Kennedy, Heather Ring (Marshall) and Ian Johnstone (Tanya), and 10 great-grandchildren Daniel Kennedy and Taylor Heald, Cole Kennedy, Linnea, Juliet, Lucy and Bridget Ring, and Declan, Ty and Blake Johnstone. Dad not only served his country but also his community. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, having served as an elder on Session in both Toronto and Winnipeg. He also was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club, joining in Toronto and continuing with the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg. He was a recipient of the Mel Osborne Fellow Award for his service to Kiwanis and the Community. Family and friends had the opportunity to celebrate with Dad at his 100th Birthday Party with a theme of baseball, reflecting his love of baseball (which he played and coached as a young man) and his interest in all sports. As long as he was able, Dad enjoyed cheering for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their chosen sports. Norm is survived also by a brother Robert Parish (Peggy), and several nieces. The family wishes to thank the staff of West Park Manor who have served Mom and Dad and our family for 15 years of difficult times. Their kindness, thoughtfulness and tender care can't be forgotten. A memorial service will be held at Westwood Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3R 1X2 or a charity of your choice.
