Obituary announcement for old comrade Loton Harris

HARRIS, Loton Henery HARRIS, Loton Henery (Lou), passed peacefully at Kingston General Hospital on February 16th, with daughter Sue, holding his hand as he slipped gently away. Lou is survived by his three children, son Robert and wife, Johanne, and his granddaughter Josee-Anne, of Nepean ON, daughters, Sue of Sombra ON, and Dawn, of Bridgetown NS. Predeceased by wives Nancy, (nee Morrison) and Edna, (nee Bowen) also remembered, and greatly missed by his best friend Hazel Tuepah. In keeping with Lou's wishes, no visitation or funeral services were held. Cremation. Interment will take place later on a perfect sunny spring day at St Johns Cemetery, Rear of Leeds. Lou enlisted in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1941 age 18, relentlessly petitioning his M.O. until being sent overseas with the 5th Canadian Armored brigade in England, Italy, and Northwest Europe, ending his WW11 service in Groningen, Holland. Post war service with the Northwest Territories and Yukon Radio System at various Northern Radio Stations as a wireless radio telegrapher and meteorologist for ten years, also with the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in the Belgian Congo, surviving capture by insurgent rebels, retiring in 1966 after 26 years in the Canadian Army. Following retirement, he and his second wife Edna, built their little country Haven near Seeley's Bay, later moving to Kingston after 22 happy years. He was a popular tour guide at St. Georges Cathedral, a position he enjoyed immensely. Lou's three children were all born in the North, at Fort Simpson, NWT, Mayo YT, and Yellowknife NT. Lou loved Canada's North and kept his true northern spirit of fierce independence, generosity, adventure and fun, through all his life. He loved his children deeply, selflessly and protectively, with great pride in their accomplishments. His sense of humor, indomitable spirit, moral integrity faith, and an occasional beer or two sustained Lou through life's little adversities. He was dearly loved and admired by his children and friends, while in our hearts forever, he will be missed terribly. "Dad may you rest in eternal peace." Love Always, Sue, Bob & Dawn. " Bravo Zulu -... --.. " Profound Thanks to the compassionate care of all the Nursing staff at KGH, 9th floor Connell wing for helping ease our Dad's crossing from this life's path to the next.13150513
